Apostille

Apostille and official translation: what each one is and in which order

An apostille and an official translation are two different steps that are often requested together. The apostille certifies that a public document is authentic for use in another country; the official translation puts it into another language with legal validity. We do the translation and tell you how to combine it with the apostille.

Apostille vs translation

They are not the same, and one does not replace the other:

Apostille

Certifies the signature on a public document for Hague Convention countries. In Ecuador it is issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility.

Official translation

Puts the document into another language, signed by a translator accredited by Ecuador's Judicial Council.

Both together

When a foreign country wants the document apostilled and in its language, you need both, in the order the receiving institution requires.

What comes first, apostille or translation?

Most often the original document is apostilled first and then translated together with its apostille. Some institutions also ask for the translation to be apostilled. Since it depends on the destination country, check what you are asked for or send it to us and we will tell you the order before we start.

Frequently asked questions

What to know about official translation

Another question? Message us on WhatsApp and we will answer.

Are an apostille and a translation the same?

No. The apostille certifies the document is authentic; the official translation puts it into another language with legal validity. You often need both.

Where is a document apostilled in Ecuador?

Apostilles are issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility. We do not issue apostilles: we translate the document and its apostille.

Is the apostille translated too?

Yes. If the document is already apostilled, we translate both the document and the apostille so the foreign institution can read them.
